Google is planning a major restructuring of its hardware manufacturing network, with the company reportedly aiming to produce all Pixel smartphones, watches and wireless earbuds outside China from 2027. India and Vietnam are expected to play central roles in the strategy as Google seeks to diversify its supply chain and reduce exposure to China.
The reported move comes as Google looks to expand the Pixel business while managing geopolitical and supply-chain risks. The company has already increased manufacturing activity in India and Vietnam, strengthening its ability to shift more production away from China.
Pixel Production Moves Beyond China
Google has reportedly informed suppliers of its intention to end Pixel manufacturing in China from 2027. The company is expanding production capacity in India and Vietnam, although China remains an important part of its current manufacturing network.
A key factor behind the plan is Google’s progress in producing higher-end Pixel smartphones in Vietnam. Developing flagship devices is more complex than manufacturing products such as watches and earbuds, and the successful production of these phones has reportedly increased Google’s confidence in expanding its manufacturing footprint outside China.
If the transition is completed, Google would become one of the major smartphone companies to significantly move smartphone production away from China. Samsung has already established a large-scale manufacturing presence in Vietnam.
India Emerges as a Key Manufacturing Hub
India has become an increasingly important part of Google’s hardware strategy. Google announced plans in 2023 to manufacture Pixel smartphones in India, initially targeting the Pixel 8 and working with both international and domestic manufacturing partners.
By 2024, locally manufactured Pixel 8 devices had begun shipping in India. Google has subsequently expanded its manufacturing operations, while industry reports have indicated plans to increase production and begin exporting Pixel devices from the country.
The broader shift also reflects India’s growing role in global electronics manufacturing. Companies including Apple, Samsung and several Chinese smartphone makers have expanded production in the country, supported by government incentives and a developing component ecosystem.
Google Targets Higher Pixel Shipments
Alongside the manufacturing changes, Google is reportedly targeting stronger Pixel shipments. The company is expected to increase shipments by around 8% to 10% this year from approximately 12 million units previously.
The Pixel lineup has become strategically important to Google’s broader artificial intelligence ambitions. Smartphones provide a direct platform for Google’s Gemini AI services, giving the company an additional reason to expand the reach of its hardware business.
Google is also navigating higher memory-chip costs. Reports indicate that the company is negotiating with major memory suppliers and could combine smartphone orders with demand from its cloud-computing operations to strengthen its purchasing position.
What the Shift Means for Google
Moving Pixel production away from China could give Google greater flexibility in managing geopolitical, trade and supply-chain risks. The company also has a relatively different exposure from Apple because Pixel smartphones are not sold in China, potentially making the transition less complicated.
Vietnam offers an established electronics manufacturing ecosystem, while India’s expanding smartphone supply chain provides another production base. Together, the two countries could help Google build a more diversified hardware network.
For consumers, however, the manufacturing shift does not necessarily mean lower Pixel prices. Rising component costs, particularly for memory, could continue to influence device pricing as Google attempts to increase shipments and strengthen its position in the global smartphone market.
A Broader Shift in Global Electronics Manufacturing
Google’s strategy reflects a wider transformation in the global electronics industry, with major technology companies seeking to reduce concentration in China and build alternative manufacturing centers.
India has been a major beneficiary of this trend. Its smartphone manufacturing sector has expanded rapidly, although China continues to maintain a much larger share of global smartphone production and a deeper component ecosystem.
For Google, the planned 2027 transition represents a longer-term effort to create a more resilient production network while supporting the expansion of the Pixel brand. If executed as planned, India and Vietnam are likely to become increasingly important to Google’s global hardware operations.
