Fueled by a surge in demand for data and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities among Indian companies, San Francisco’s Databricks has experienced remarkable growth in its India operations, with over 80% annual growth over the last two years.
Databricks has attracted a wide range of Indian clientele, including notable names such as Air India, Krutrim (under the Ola Group umbrella), Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, CommerceIQ, Freshworks, InMobi, Meesho, Myntra, Parle, and UPL, among others. These firms have been utilizing Databricks’ Data Intelligence Platform to streamline their operations, foster innovation with predictive analytics and AI, and make smarter business decisions.
Anil Bhasin, the vice president and country manager for Databricks India, shared his insights on the trend, stating, “In the last couple of years, we’ve seen a significant uptick in the demand for data and AI solutions from various sectors in India, ranging from financial services to retail, manufacturing, and tech-centric companies. This trend not only showcases the growing interest in enterprise AI in India but also strengthens our dedication to equipping local enterprises with advanced data and AI tools.”
Echoing this commitment, Ed Lenta, the Senior Vice President and General Manager for Databricks in the Asia Pacific and Japan region, emphasized the company’s investment in India. He highlighted recent initiatives such as launching Databricks infrastructure on Google Cloud and expanding their market reach and research and development teams in India. “We’re eager to support more Indian businesses in securely harnessing AI with their data on our platform,” he added.
Ravi Jain, Vice President at Krutrim, expressed enthusiasm about their collaboration with Databricks, focusing on enhancing their foundational Large Language Models (LLMs). “Our partnership with Databricks has been instrumental in developing and refining our base model, Krutrim, ensuring it delivers high-quality responses in various Indian languages and dialects,” Jain noted.
Additionally, Databricks announced the introduction of its infrastructure on Google Cloud’s Mumbai region in India, aiming to cater to its expanding customer base and the rising demand for its Data Intelligence Platform. This move, coupled with the opening of its research and development hub in Bengaluru last year, underscores Databricks’ long-term commitment to the Indian market, as stated in a company press release.
