Google has expanded payment flexibility on its digital storefront by adding Venmo as a payment option on Google Play in the United States. The integration allows eligible users to connect their Venmo accounts and use them to purchase apps, games, in-app content and other digital products.
The move comes as consumer spending on mobile applications and digital services continues to grow, increasing the importance of convenient payment methods for app stores and developers.
Google Play Adds Venmo as a Payment Option
Users can connect Venmo through the payment-methods section of their Google Play account settings. Once linked, Venmo can be selected when making eligible digital purchases.
Payments can draw on a user’s Venmo balance as well as funding sources connected to the Venmo account, including eligible bank accounts and payment cards. The option also extends to subscriptions and certain creator-support features within apps.
The addition gives U.S. Google Play customers another alternative alongside existing payment methods. Google Play already supports services such as PayPal and Cash App in the U.S., as well as major card networks including American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and JCB.
Expanding Digital Payment Choices
The integration reflects the broader shift toward digital wallets and alternative payment methods for online purchases. Rather than relying exclusively on traditional debit or credit cards, consumers increasingly have access to multiple digital payment options within major online platforms.
For Google Play, adding Venmo could make the checkout process more familiar for users who already maintain funds or linked financial accounts through the payment service.
The change is currently relevant to users in the United States, while Google has continued experimenting with alternative purchasing methods in other markets. In some countries, for example, Google has tested ways for consumers to pay for digital purchases using cash at participating nearby stores.
Mobile App Spending Continues to Rise
The expansion comes against a backdrop of increasing consumer expenditure on mobile applications and in-app purchases. According to data cited from analytics firm Sensor Tower, spending across Apple’s App Store and Google Play exceeded $167 billion in 2025, representing a 10.6% increase from the previous year.
As app subscriptions, mobile games and digital services become increasingly important sources of revenue, payment convenience is becoming a significant part of the broader mobile-app economy.
Google’s addition of Venmo therefore strengthens the range of payment choices available to Google Play customers while giving users another way to complete digital transactions without entering card details directly at every purchase.
