Apple has unveiled its new iPad mini with an 8.5-inch OLED display, the A20 Pro processor and a thinner, lighter design. Announced on October 26, 2026, the updated tablet introduces improvements to display quality, artificial intelligence (AI) performance, connectivity and durability.

The new iPad mini starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular version in the United States. Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on October 28, with availability starting November 6, according to Apple.

New iPad Mini Features an 8.5-Inch OLED Display

The redesigned iPad mini features an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, up from the previous generation’s 8.3-inch screen. Apple has reduced the bezels to accommodate the larger display while maintaining a compact form factor.

The screen supports peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits and full-screen brightness of 600 nits for standard dynamic range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR) content. Its 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio is designed to deliver deeper blacks and improved visual detail.

Apple has also introduced an optional nano-texture display finish to reduce glare in brightly lit environments. The feature is intended to help users who work outdoors or use the tablet under challenging lighting conditions.

A20 Pro Chip Boosts Performance and AI Capabilities

The new iPad mini is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which the company says delivers significant improvements in processing, graphics and AI workloads.

According to Apple, the processor provides up to 60% faster multithreaded CPU performance and up to 4.5 times faster AI performance compared with the previous generation. The seven-core GPU includes Neural Accelerators designed to support demanding AI and graphics tasks.

These upgrades are intended to improve activities such as photo editing, gaming, multitasking and running AI applications directly on the device.

The tablet also supports the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features through iPadOS 27. These capabilities are designed to help users retrieve information, ask questions and interact with content displayed on their screens.

Thinner Design Adds Water and Dust Resistance

The updated tablet measures 5.4 millimetres thick, making it thinner than its predecessor. Apple has also introduced an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, providing additional protection during everyday use.

The device is available in Midnight and Starlight finishes. Its compact design continues to target users who need a portable tablet for reading, communication, creative work and productivity.

Apple has also introduced an Acoustic Display system designed to improve audio output, including bass response and volume during video playback and gaming.

Connectivity and Camera Improvements

The new iPad mini includes a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera positioned along the landscape edge, supporting video calls and other camera-based applications.

Apple has upgraded wireless connectivity with its N1 networking chip, which supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Cellular models use the company’s C2 modem system, designed to improve mobile data speeds and power efficiency.

The tablet also supports fast charging, adding another practical improvement for users who rely on it throughout the day.

iPad Mini Pricing and Availability

In the United States, the new iPad mini starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi configuration and $849 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Customers can begin placing pre-orders on October 28, 2026, through Apple’s online store and Apple Store app in supported markets. Sales and customer deliveries are scheduled to begin November 6.

The launch expands Apple’s tablet lineup with a more capable compact device, combining an OLED screen with updated processing hardware and connectivity features.

The extent to which these changes influence demand will depend on factors including pricing, real-world performance and how users adopt the new AI capabilities.
